What Happens When You Die
The North doesn’t forgive mistakes: a mutant, a bandit’s bullet, or just the cold — and there’s your character, lying in the snow. The good news is that death here doesn’t mean “start all over again.” It’s more of a long walk back to your own body than a permanent loss.
Where your loot goes
The moment you die, all of your character’s pickable inventory vanishes from your hands and is moved into a hidden “death container.” This container is kept in your account’s personal storage, and a marker appears on the world map at the spot where you fell, so you can retrieve your belongings.
The key point: the loss is private. No “corpse” is left behind at the place of your death for another player to loot — the loot is visible and accessible only to your account. No one but you can get to it.
What is NOT lost
- Premium currency (the special currency the monetization is built on) is never lost on death — it’s excluded from the capture.
- System, non-movable items (the ones you can’t drop) stay with you.
- The personal storage itself, along with everything in it, is untouched.
Regular money, however, is lost like any other item — it goes into the death container along with the rest of your loot. Only premium currency survives.
The only real cost
You’ll get all of your loot back in full (for how, see the article on recovering your belongings). The only direct consequence of death is gear wear: when you die, one equipped item takes +10 wear. The game picks the first eligible weapon or armor among your slots (primary weapon, then secondary, then armor) — and only if that item is subject to wear at all. The rest of your equipment is unaffected.
There’s no penalty to experience, level, or skills for dying. And accumulated wear is restored by repair — so even this cost isn’t final.
Respawn and the starter kit
After death you don’t respawn empty-handed: the game hands you a fresh starter kit — the very same set a character receives at creation. Even if you died with no items at all, you won’t be left without gear.
To keep kits from piling up with every death, when you reclaim your loot one starter kit is subtracted from the death container — so you always end up with exactly one set, not a heap of identical items. If there was nothing to lose (or only this kit), the death container isn’t even created, and there will be no marker on the map.
What to do next
Right after you die, you’ll see a message that your belongings stayed where you fell and can be retrieved at the marked spot on the world map. Take the starter kit, make your way to your death marker — and pick everything back up. For exactly how this retrieval works, see the article “Recovering Your Belongings.”
