Redistribution and Character Rebuilds
Made a mistake building your character — poured a skill into the wrong branch or unlocked an ability you didn’t need? In Last Frontier you can rebuild your character, and there are two different tools for it: rolling points back right in the character window, and a full-reset item.
Rolling points back on the fly
The character window lets you not only spend points but also take them back. The “minus” buttons next to stats, skills, and abilities lower the value and return the spent point to your unallocated pool:
- Stats — “minus” removes a point from the stat and returns it to your stat point pool.
- Skills — raising and lowering both cost exactly 1 point per unit (no progressive pricing), so rolling back returns exactly as much as you put in.
- Abilities — an unlocked ability can be removed, and the points spent on it return to your pool.
When you lower a stat or skill, the game immediately rechecks the requirements of your unlocked abilities: if an ability no longer meets the stat or skill level, it closes automatically (the point is returned). You can’t slip into an illegal build.
Important: rolling back is not unlimited. You can only lower within what has been allocated in your current setup — the game won’t let you drop below the locked threshold. A stat can’t be lowered below the character-creation minimum, and a skill can’t go below its starting zero. Otherwise you could endlessly “farm” points by lowering old investments and re-leveling.
Out of combat only
Any edit to your build — a stat, a skill, unlocking or toggling an ability — works only out of combat. In combat the buttons are locked, and any attempt to change something returns an unavailable message. Your active set of abilities is a decision made in advance, not something you juggle in the middle of a firefight.
Full respec: the reset item
When rolling back on the fly no longer helps (old investments are locked), the character reset item comes into play. It’s used like any inventory item and works in one of two modes:
- Partial rebuild. Returns base stats to their starting values, restores your starting stat point pool, and refunds all points invested in unlocked abilities (the abilities themselves close). Level, experience, and skills are kept — this is a redistribution of your already-accumulated stat and ability budget, without resetting your progression.
- Full reset. Rolls the hero back to the beginning: level to 1, experience to 0, stats and skills to their starting values, all abilities closed; reputation and quest progress are wiped as well. Essentially a clean slate for an existing character.
The partial rebuild deliberately leaves level, experience, and skills untouched: otherwise you could re-level and gain skill and ability points a second time.
How this fits into your preparation
Development in the Frontier is a “trail of habits”: your role is built for specific expeditions. A respec is a tool of that same preparation — you try a combat build, realize the group needs a scavenger or a medic more, and rebuild your hero. Keep in mind that part of your strength lives in your states (cold, poison, radiation, and fatigue temporarily change your effective stats) — a respec won’t “cure” those.
The redistribution and rebuild mechanic itself is available to players right now.
