Player-to-Player Trading

In a world where every survivor has their own goals, direct barter between players is sometimes better than a trip to a trader: the one who brought the materials and the one who knows how to craft find common ground faster than at any counter. In Last Frontier this is a full-fledged deal between two living characters, and it works only by mutual consent.

What player-to-player barter is

Player-to-player barter is a separate deal between two living characters standing next to each other. One offers the barter, the other accepts it, after which both see each other’s items, lay out their own offer, and each confirms their readiness separately. The main principle is simple: items change hands not because someone clicked faster, but because both sides have explicitly agreed to a specific deal.

Conditions for a deal

Before a barter can even begin, the game checks a few things. If even one condition is not met, the deal will not open:

  • Proximity. Both characters must be close to each other, within talking distance. You cannot hand items across the whole map.
  • Two living players. The target of the barter must be another player character, not an NPC. Both must be alive.
  • The target is open to barter. A character flagged as unavailable for barter will not accept the offer.
  • Neither of the two is busy with another deal. You cannot run two barters at once.

How a barter goes, step by step

  • Invitation. The initiator offers a barter to a nearby player.
  • Consent. The second player receives a request that can be accepted or declined. Without their consent, the deal will not start.
  • Laying out the offer. Each side puts their items and their quantities into the deal. Both sides are visible — the barter is conducted openly.
  • Readiness. Once the offer is assembled, the player marks their readiness. The barter is executed only when both have marked readiness — only at that moment do the items change hands.

An important safeguard: any change to an offer resets readiness for both sides. This means it is impossible to swap items after a partner has confirmed the deal — they will have to confirm again with the new contents.

What can and cannot be bartered

Only items that are allowed to be transferred in principle can enter a deal — the same ones that can be picked up as loot and that are not flagged as non-barterable. Restrictions on individual items do not turn into a way around the rules of trading, looting, or theft: if an item cannot be bartered, you cannot sneak it through player-to-player barter either.

Canceling a deal at any moment fully clears both offers and resets readiness, and the window closes for both participants — no hanging state is left behind.

No value check

Unlike barter with an NPC, in player-to-player barter the game does not compare the value of the offers and does not control overload. There is no automatic “fair price” here: the sides negotiate it themselves, and the system merely transfers exactly the items both have agreed on. That is why the value of an item in such a barter is determined by another person’s need here and now — for someone a rare find matters more than ammo, and for someone else it’s the other way around.

Open mode

Right now player-to-player barter works only in open mode: both participants always see each other’s items. Hidden mode (“hide your offer”) is indicated in the interface but is not active in the current version — regardless of the choice, the deal proceeds openly.
