The World of Last Frontier
Last Frontier is a post-apocalyptic MMORPG about survival in a world frozen over after a global nuclear war. To understand what’s happening around your character, start with the essentials: where you are, what year it is, and why it’s so deadly cold here.
When the story takes place
The game is set in the year 2052 — three decades after the catastrophe. In 2022, the standoff between the USSR and the USA erupted into an open Third World War that wiped out most forms of life on the planet. The few who survived the atomic bombs immediately faced a new threat — the deadly cold of a nuclear winter.
Over the past thirty years the climate has barely eased: the temperature has risen by only a couple of degrees and stays below zero all year round. If warmth ever returns, it won’t be before the next century. So the world of 2052 isn’t a “recovery after the war” — it’s a long, drawn-out winter in which survivors are learning to live all over again.
Where the story unfolds
The game map covers the Far Eastern region of the USSR and the western part of Alaska, the coldest state in the USA. Because of the global cold snap, the Bering Strait has frozen over and turned into a solid ice bridge linking the two continents. In canon, this explains how you can travel across the lands of the former superpowers, find settlements that sprang up after the catastrophe, and explore abandoned military sites and shelters.
It’s one of the most unusual settings in the genre: instead of the familiar scorched deserts, you get the snowbound expanses of Chukotka and Alaska — ice, blizzards, and ruins buried under the snow.
What the island is
At the center of events lies St. Lawrence Island in the Bering Sea. When the region was locked in ice, this island, by sheer luck, didn’t freeze over and remained fit to live on. That’s exactly why survivors managed to gain a foothold here, and post-war settlements grew up on the relatively isolated island.
The island’s isolation is both a protection and a threat. The very fact that the place stayed habitable eventually made it a target for those who roam the far side of the ice.
What conditions are like here
The island’s climate is arctic and merciless. Frosts easily reach −80 °C, and winds gust up to 60 meters per second. At that wind force, the rare precipitation turns into a lethal blizzard capable of ripping massive dead trees out of the frozen ground and battering dilapidated structures. The region sits in an area of low pressure, so the weather here changes sharply and unpredictably.
The cold isn’t just a backdrop — it’s the world’s main pressure: adapting to the deadly frost is the first thing your character will have to do.
Wildlife was unlucky too. Of the region’s more than sixty plant species, only a few of the hardiest survived the frosts. At first, hunters, traders, and scavengers brought still-living herbs and shrubs into the towns, but the acute need for medicine quickly turned fruits, roots, and leaves into a luxury — and the last pockets of vegetation were depleted. Today, flora survives only in rare, inaccessible corners: the radioactive ruins of megacities, underground caves, and sealed bunkers.
What this world is about
A survivor on St. Lawrence Island is no lone figure in the void. The canon promises a living social world: communication and trade, the struggle for resources, banding together into communities, faction warfare, and the seizing and holding of settlements. On the hostile expanses, it’s not only people who await you, but also the spawn of the cold — those born of this new, frozen nature.
In a world that survived a nuclear catastrophe, there are no clearly good or bad sides. Many quests put you before a hard choice, one that comes at a price. That’s what makes the island feel alive: here, what matters isn’t only frost and ammo, but also whose side you’re on.
Platform
Right now, Last Frontier is releasing on PC for Windows. Support for other platforms — Linux, Mac, mobile devices, and a browser version — is mentioned in canon as plans for the future, but at this point those are not released versions.
