Light in the Polar Night Is Sweet After All

1 November 2022

Adding new enemies is one of the important directions of the upcoming alpha update.

Allow us to present to you concept art of various variations of mutated dogs. Some of them are already in the game build, while the final stage of work still continues on others.

The game world includes the territory of Chukotka, Alaska, and the icy Crust that has formed between the two continents, which is a rather curious biome from the standpoint of the creatures inhabiting it.

This allows us to expand the variety of enemy species in the game as much as possible. At the same time, as the combat system develops, each of the enemies will have its own particular features for the optimal tactics of fighting against them.

The first enemy we’d like to tell you about is the Vagabond: the most common type of mutated dog.

Being a hybrid of all the local breeds, the dog is afflicted by a number of mutations that have led to the appearance of cartilage cutting through its lean body. The vagabond’s noticeably enlarged nose gives the mutant the ability to catch the slightest scent of prey at an outstanding distance from its target.

The Stone Vagabond — a subspecies afflicted by calcinosis and other mutations, because of which its body is covered with a large number of extremely hard knobby growths that have broken through its hide.

Causing pain with every movement, the growths weigh the body down and slow the dog, but provide decent protection from damage — there have been cases where bullets fired at a stone vagabond ricocheted, dealing the mutant no damage.

Next in line is the Mutated Coyote. Living mostly in the deep territory of Alaska, coyotes pose a serious threat to small groups of survivors thanks to the sheer numbers of their packs.

Coyotes aren’t very strong; their bites can’t seriously harm even a moderately armored target, but the mutants are excessively hardy and rely on attacking in numbers. Having worn the enemy down, the mutated coyotes finish it off without any threat to themselves.

And the roundup is concluded by one of the dangerous subspecies of the Herald — the Herald-Grabber. Thanks to the grips on its large head, the mutant is able to hold an enemy in one place for a long time, having clamped onto a leg.

The huge two-headed mutant dog is extremely strong, and, using its weight, can easily tear off a victim’s limb, which is why survivors try not to let the herald-grabber get close.

And that’s where the art roundup ends, but there’s still much that’s new ahead.
